BYRON CENTER — No. 2-ranked Farmington Hills Mercy went 3-0 at the Blue Chip Michigan Tournament on Saturday, beating Grandville, 6-1, Kalamazoo Christian, 5-0, and No. 3-ranked Caledonia, 6-1.
Andrea Elmore had the big blow against Grandville, driving in two runs in a three-run first inning, in support of Abby Krzywiecki, who struck out nine in a one-hitter.

Andrea Elmore has contributed greatly to the Mercy High School softball team’s success with her pitching.
She showed another side of her athletic ability Thursday, demonstrating she also can hit the ball.
Elmore’s three-run homer helped separate the Marlins from visiting Allen Park Cabrini and propel them to a 6-2 victory in a Catholic League semifinal game.

Mercy sophomore Mia Flynn broke a 35-year-old school record in the long jump Tuesday when she reached a distance of 16 feet, 111/2 inches.
The previous record was 16-11 by Cathe Bridges in 1981.
It had been seven years since a Mercy record was broken. The last to do it was Abbey Lovat, who broke Kristi Ramsey’s high jump record in 2009.

Mercy High School clinched the Catholic League Central Division softball championship and earned a first-round bye in the tournament Wednesday.
The Marlins finished 12-0 in the division by winning a doubleheader from host and defending league champion Warren Regina, 11-4 and 6-4 in eight innings.

Warren Regina’s turning point last season was beating Farmington Hills Mercy in a doubleheader after the Marlins had won their first 10 games in the Catholic League. That sprung Regina on a winning streak which led to a state championship for coach Diane Laffey’s crew.

Abby Krzywiecki still has the first home-run ball she hit as a keepsake and piece of personal sports memorabilia in her bedroom.
If she had saved every one she has ever hit, they just might fill the room.
Krzywiecki has belted a lot of dingers in 10 years of playing softball, including 36 during a four-year varsity career at Mercy High School.

Farmington Hills Mercy swept its four-game season series with Birmingham Marian in softball Tuesday, but the last of the victories was not easily achieved.
After winning the first game in five innings, 13-2, the teams went back and forth in the second until the visiting Marlins eked out a 10-9 win.

Junior Arianna Allman was a triple winner for Farmington Hills Mercy in girls track and field Tuesday, leading her team to a 79-49 win over Wixom St. Catherine of Siena.
She earned first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.60 seconds and was the runner-up in the 100 hurdles at 20.87.

Mercy High School softball standout Abby Krzywiecki is a finalist for the Detroit Athletic Club’s High School Female Athlete of the Year Award.
The senior first baseman is one of six girls to be named as one of the finalists for the award. Six boys were selected, too.
