Mercy maintained a share of first place in the Catholic League Central Division by defeating Dearborn Divine Child in girls basketball Friday, 44-34.

The Marlins are tied with rival Bloomfield Hills Marian, which plays Tuesday at Mercy. Both teams are 5-1.

Mercy expanded an 8-4 lead after one quarter Friday to 23-12 at halftime. The second half was virtually even.

Farmington Hills Mercy built an early lead and cruised to a 52-28 victory over host Livonia Ladywood in girls basketball Tuesday.

The Marlins led 18-7 after one quarter and 26-11 at halftime. Mercy outscored Ladywood in the first and third quarters combined, 30-9, and was ahead at the end of three, 38-13.

Farmington Hills Mercy earned its third consecutive victory Tuesday with an uncharacteristically easy win over host Dearborn Divine Child, 47-24.

Historically, most games between the Catholic League Central Division opponents are close, down-to-the-wire battles that are decided by eight points or less.

Farmington Hills Mercy won another nail-biter Friday in girls basketball, edging visiting Warren Regina in its Catholic League opener, 30-27.

The Marlins were ahead after one quarter, 12-7, but the teams were tied at halftime, 18-18. Mercy had a 24-21 lead through three periods.

Mercy High School will host a “Welcome Home” celebration and reunion for its 1977 and 1982 state champion basketball teams Friday evening.

The event will take place at halftime of Mercy’s Catholic League Central Division opener against Warren Regina. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

After watching a big first-half lead disappear, Farmington Hills Mercy managed to bear down and refocus its effort at the end of the basketball game Tuesday.

And that made it a happy ending for the Marlins, who scored the last four points to defeat visiting Harper Woods Chandler Park, 39-35.

The idea was twofold: Get middle-school-aged girls more excited about a possible career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) career and help them toward a good school where they could pursue such a career.

By most measures, organizers of the robotics event “Robogirls,” hosted by ZF/TRW earlier this month at Mercy High School, was a success.

Fortunately for Mercy coach Gary Morris and the varsity basketball team’s season outlook, the Marlins have nine returning players.

That high number will help them cope with a rash of injuries and put experienced players on the floor, though their depth won’t be the same.
