Dear Mercy Parent/Guardian,
Mercy students and parents frequently cite family and community as important factors in choosing Mercy High School. In addition to the academic excellence and extraordinary co-curricular experiences present at Mercy, the dedication and care of our faculty and staff allow students to learn in a safe and welcoming school.
This school year is unique in that we welcome multiple new team members. All join our Mercy family with great content knowledge and talent. As importantly, each brings warmth and enthusiasm with their commitment to support your daughter(s).
I am pleased to introduce the new Mercy faculty and staff!
Roy Asher (Math) holds a B.S. from Michigan State University (Engineering Industrial Design), an M.B.A. from the University of Detroit-Mercy and a teaching endorsement in secondary math certification. Roy formerly taught at Loyola High School where he also participates as robotics coach. Mercy students will benefit as Roy helps to form real world applications of math concepts using his previous career experience at Ford Motor Company, Product Development Engineering.
Darlene Earls (Fine Arts) earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Delaware, a Master of Fine Arts degree from the historic School for American Craftsman at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and K-12 art certification from Oakland University. Prior to entering the field of education, Darlene worked professionally in New York at Tiffany & Company as a designer and metalsmith. Mercy students will be inspired by her true artistic passion and curiosity. Darlene joins us from Our Lady of Refuge and currently also teaches adult art courses at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center.
Gillian (Jill) Herold (English) is originally from Toronto, Ontario and joins our team with Honors certifications in both Engish and History. A strength of Jill's is in helping students connect organizational skills to essay writing through her energetic and motivating personality. She has much experience in mentoring and coaching students for ACT/SAT writing success. Jill previously worked at Jalen Rose Leadership Academy.
Amy Maida (Learning Specialist) partners with Dr. Kristine Daley to further enhance support offered through Mercy's AMES program. Amy holds a Masters of Arts in Education from Eastern Michigan University, and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Central Michigan University. She is a certified Reading Specialist with endorsements in Special Education and Educational Leadership. Amy has extensive experience in supporting students through practices of inquiry and innovation, and will also provide teachers with strategies to help students become the best version of themselves.
Megan Neumann '91 (Advancement Assistant) joins the Advancement Office.Megan has been actively involved in Mercy High School Alumnae Association events and will be assisting the Advancement Office with database and Special Events. Megan graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelors of Science in Education. Megan's background is in Elementary and Special education and she has most recently served as a Kindergarten Aid at Saint Patrick School in White Lake.
Tyler Parlor '14 is warmly welcomed back to Mercy High School as our part-time Accounting Assistant in the Business Office. Tyler earned a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Oberlin College. She continues her studies in business and accounting at Oakland Community College. She is the founder and CEO of a start-up non-profit organization, Allegory Productions, which engages in charitable and educational production of media content geared toward improving the accessibility of information, knowledge and experience. People and their storytelling is one of Tyler's main goals at Allegory. She believes Mercy High School provided her with an excellent foundation and many opportunities. Tyler feels this is her chance to pay forward what Mercy High School has meant to her while she continues her story, of which we are blessed to be a part!
Christin Schmitt (Science) joins the team with a Master of Arts in Education Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in Science. She demonstrates course diversity, having taught classes ranging from biology and anatomy to oceanography and meteorology. No matter the curriculum, Christin is strong in her use of instructional strategies to support and build rapport with each student. Christin most recently taught at South Lyon High School.
Kristena Stachura (English) joins Mercy with over sixteen years of teaching in Catholic education. Kristena most recently worked at Our Lady of Refuge and has extensive experience in secondary education having taught at both Ladywood High School and Immaculate Conception High School. Kristena is certified to teach both secondary English and History. She holds a Masters of Arts in English Literature from Eastern Michigan University, a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. Kristena is dedicated to empowering student voices through literacy and writing.
Marylou Waineo (Media Center) joins us from St. Fabian where she has served in various roles including library aide, computer aide, teacher aide and substitute teacher. Marylou has extensive background in the use of technology and applies the diverse skills needed for this position from her former professional experiences as a corporate recruiter, human resource manager, corporate trainer, and corporate IT sales representative. She has a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences from Central Michigan University. Marylou is the Mercy mother of Julie Waineo '99.
Rebecca (Becky) Zimmerman (Math) comes to Mercy with a Master of Arts in Administration, a Master of Arts in secondary education, and a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising. Aside from math instruction, Becky has extensive experience in math intervention strategies, having worked as a math support specialist. She recently assisted with our Mercy summer math lab, and has already made a positive impact in supporting Mercy students . Becky joins us from Waterford Mott High School.
In addition, two current team members are excited to assume their new roles at Mercy:
Alisa Kelly (Attendance Coordinator) has been a part of the Mercy family for 13 years as a warm and caring member of the Maintenance where she also managed the student work program. She previously worked as a para-educator, substitute teacher, and classroom tutor. Alisa holds a Para-Educator Certificate from Oakland University and is currently focusing on a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Kaplan University.
Laura Everett '98 (Alumnae Relations Director) has been a Mercy staff member since 2015 as an Attendance Officer and will now be moving to the Advancement Office as the new Alumnae Relations Director. Laura's prior experience included organizing special events, sponsorships, marketing and social media plans. Laura holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, and a Bachelors of Arts in Communications from Grand Valley State University.
There is much excitement throughout the Mercy staff with the addition of our new team members who bring positive energy and fresh perspective.
