Mercy’s Conn wins O&E contest
Mercy High School senior Ellyse Conn is the Observer & Eccentric’s Athlete of the Week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4.
Conn won the contest with 10,437 votes and by more than 5,000 over Birmingham Groves football player Nate Highley, who was second with 5,384.
The other nominees were Jason Wooster, Lakeland football (1,634); DeMarco McKinney, Churchill football (1,185); and Katie Chipman, Plymouth golf (177).
Conn was nominated after winning two individual events in the Oct. 3 Oakland County swim meet at Lake Orion High School.
She won the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.91) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.22) to lead the Marlins to their 11th consecutive team title.
Conn also contributed to a Mercy victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Marlins set a county record with their time of 3:31.99.
