This summer, a group of enthusiastic 3rd- and 4th-year French students realized a long-held dream: traveling to France for the very first time. Accompanied by Madame Campbell, the students embarked on Le Grand Voyage, an unforgettable journey filled with history, culture, and hands-on experiences.
The adventure began with a powerful visit to Normandy, where students learned firsthand about the historic D-Day invasions of World War II. Highlights included walking along the beaches of Omaha, Utah, and Juno, exploring Pointe du Hoc, and reflecting at the German military cemetery. At the American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, Madame Campbell laid a wreath in honor of all World War II medics, creating a deeply moving moment for all.
The group then traveled to the picturesque Loire Valley to explore two royal châteaux—Amboise and Chenonceau. Students had the chance to practice their French at a local market, buying provisions for an authentic picnic lunch along the banks of the Loire River.
On the way to Paris, students marveled at the Gothic architecture of Chartres Cathedral and enjoyed biking through the expansive gardens of Versailles, circling the Grand Canal. Upon their much-anticipated arrival in Paris, the itinerary included iconic landmarks such as Notre Dame, the Louvre, and a thrilling ascent to the top of the Eiffel Tower. One highlight was a macaron-making class with a French master baker, where students proudly brought their sweet creations home. The Paris stay concluded with a crêpe dinner, a sunset boat ride along the Seine, and the magical sight of the Eiffel Tower sparkling at night.
The journey continued south to Provence, where students visited the Pont du Gard and explored the charming towns of Arles and Aix-en-Provence. There, they took part in a painting lesson inspired by Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire. The trip concluded in Nice, with a guided bike tour of the city, swimming in the Mediterranean, and a perfume workshop in nearby Èze, where students discovered the artistry of French fragrance-making.
Throughout Le Grand Voyage, students had countless opportunities to engage with French culture and practice speaking the language in authentic settings. From markets to museums, kitchens to coastlines, the trip brought classroom lessons to life in the most memorable way. Madame Campbell expressed how proud she was of Mercy’s French students for their enthusiasm, curiosity, and growth as global citizens.
