2024 Tony Scalzi Spirit of a Marlin Award

Elle Borys '24

This past summer, we experienced a great loss in the Mercy Athletic Family with the passing of Mr. Tony Scalzi. For 33 years, Mr. Scalzi dedicated his time and energy to Mercy as a teacher, leaving a lasting impact on all those he encountered. Even after his retirement, Tony continued to be a pillar of support within our community, always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. Whether it was substitute teaching, assisting with crowd control, or ensuring that event workers were well-fed, Tony's dedication and selflessness shone through in everything he did. One of Tony's greatest passions was cheering on our Marlins with unwavering spirit and enthusiasm. His love for our school and its athletic programs was infectious, and his presence at numerous events over the years left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Tony's spirit of generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand to others left a lasting impact on all who knew him. He embodied the true essence of what it means to be a Marlin - showing unwavering support, dedication, and enthusiasm for our school and its athletic programs. His presence at athletic events, whether helping with crowd control, managing the gate, or coordinating food for event workers, always brought a sense of camaraderie and community to our Mercy family. In honor of Tony's legacy and his passion for cheering on our Marlins with unmatched spirit, it is with great pleasure that I announce the recipient of the first annual Tony Scalzi Spirit of a Marlin Award. This award recognizes a Marlin who, over the past four years, has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to our school, shown exceptional support for our athletic teams, and embodied the true spirit of being a Marlin.

Congratulations Elle Borys! Elle's unwavering presence at numerous athletic events, her eagerness to lend a helping hand wherever needed, and her infectious Marlin spirit have not gone unnoticed. Elle's dedication to our school community and her genuine enthusiasm for supporting our athletes exemplify the values that Tony Scalzi held dear.
