FRENCH OLYMPICS 2023
All French students participated in the inaugural French Olympics at Mercy HIgh School during their French classes on October 3, 2023. We wanted to join in the celebration with Paris, where the actual Olympics are happening this summer in July.
Madame Campbell opened the Olympics with a torch bearing ceremony accompanied by the French National Anthem, “La Marseillaise” as the students entered the baseball diamond to begin the competitions. The coaches, Madame Campbell, Madame Kreucher and Madame Shea, monitored the competitions as the students engaged in 4 games: La Pétanque, Jeter la Fève, L’escargot and the famous Waiters Race, which takes place in Paris on Bastille Day.
French Honor Society Officers, Miranda Lebednick, Katelyn Cronin, Marie Schueneman and Emma O’Donnell were the game organizers and helped the students with the directions on how to play the games. Miranda Lebednick and Katelyn Cronan were excellent teachers of Pétanque since they were taught by the professionals on their student trip to Paris this past summer.
Madame Kreucher placed the gold, silver and bronze medals on the winners of each game at the end of the competitions. A special “Merci beaucoup” to Mr. O’Donnell who created our tri-colored boards for the Jeter la Fève game. This activity was truly a team effort!
