Taylor Jones and Siyeh Frazier turned the opening game of the girls basketball state tournament into their version of anything-you-can-do-I-can-do-better.
Up and down the court they went. If Frazier scored for Detroit Renaissance, then Jones felt compelled to immediately answer with a basket for Farmington Hills Mercy.

Farmington Hills Mercy had just the kind of basketball game coach Gary Morris wanted for his team before going into postseason play next week.
That was a good, competitive game against a quality opponent and which resulted in a nice, comfortable victory for the Marlins.

Seniors Taylor Jones and Bridget Lyons are far apart in the number of points they've scored for the Mercy High School basketball team this season, but both made significant scoring achievements Tuesday.
Jones was way under her season average with 10 points during limited playing time as the host Marlins routed Warren Michigan Collegiate, 64-25.

Livonia — For athletes who are seniors, the last rivalry game makes time feel like it is balanced on the point of a needle, leaning perilously forward.
Before the game, as it has been for years, so much is preparation. Afterward, it is on to a new stage of life.

But as far as where the Madison Heights Bishop Foley girls basketball team would be seeded, and just who it would play in the 2015 Catholic League playoffs, the snowstorm of last week prevented any of those answers from shaping up just yet.

Farmington Hills Mercy secured second place in the Catholic League Central Division with its 62-39 win over host Livonia Ladywood in girls basketball Friday.
The Marlins, who finished 5-3 in division play, will play either Pontiac Notre Dame Prep or Allen Park Cabrini in the league tournament at 4 p.m. next Saturday at Riverview Gabriel Richard.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Joe Jones admitted that he knew exactly what he had, but he had no clue what to expect.
With all the talent he figured his roster would include, there was no real way to be sure.
“Not until they hit the ice,” the Farmington Hills Mercy hockey coach said. “You never really know until they get out there and start playing games.”
He knows now, and he’s loving it.

Farmington Hills Mercy started fast and never looked back Thursday night as it cruised to a 56-41win over host Harper Woods Chandler Park in girls basketball.
The Marlins posted 25 points in the first eight minutes and outscored the Eagles in the second quarter, 11-5, for a commanding lead at halftime, 36-16.
