From Coach Montijo:
Despite the rain, the Mercy Cross-country team ran exceptionally well on Saturday at the Legends Meet at Huron Meadows after a week of challenging workouts. The course was wet but quicker than expected. Huron Meadows is considered one of the faster courses in the area, but with the rain, the ground was harder and faster than normal.
As a result, eleven out of the 15 young ladies who ran earned personal records, season records, or course records. It was an exceptional day for the team despite the overall finish as a team. Here is a snapshot of how everyone did:
Lily Fromm--SPR of 0:19
Katie Kim- SPR of 0:12
Maddy Kenney--LPR/CPR of 0:51 (earned her letter by beating 22:30)
Gabby Pluszczynski--SPR of 0:14
Anna Jain --SPR of 0:41
Grace Martin--SPR/CPR of 0:16
Jaye McNeil- LPR/CPR of 0:24
Paige Wiaduck- LPR/CPR of 0:05 (second PR of the week)
Erica D'Souza-- SPR of 0:53
Delilah Coe-SPR/CPR of 0:28
Overall, the team finished 15/15 in the Gold Division, but as coaches, we are not worried about this finish. In the division, they ran against Ann Arbor Pioneer, Northville, Brighton, Plymouth, and Saline to name a few. These teams contend for the state title every year, so we had moved the team up a division to give them competition and to run with the quicker teams. The team--as you can see--truly responded and even the JV team and parents commented on "how fast" the varsity race was. It was our goal to challenge the ladies against these quicker teams to not only motivate them to run faster, but also give them a morale boost that they can indeed run with these teams. Based on the PRs the ladies ran, I would say the goal was successful and achieved.
