Juniors College Essay Workshop

Published on 03/31/2015

Dear Junior Parents/Guardians,

Mercy High School's Counseling Department is pleased to announce that Wow Writing Workshop, leading experts on the college application essay, will be visiting Mercy on Wednesday, April 15th to conduct an in-depth, interactive essay writing workshop with all junior students.

Wow is a local company with national reach. Over the last several years, they have helped thousands of college-bound students write outstanding college essays to help each student stand out in the college application process.
More colleges than ever before want a personal statement or essay from high school students as part of their application. As college admissions becomes increasingly more competitive, the college essay is an integral piece of the review process and can be a defining factor in the admissions decision for some schools. Colleges use the essay to not only glean the student's writing skills, but to also learn more about the student and how they express themselves. Essentially, college admission officers want to find out what sets an applicant apart from other talented candidates. The goal for the student is to write a focused and substantive essay that answers the question presented. Mercy wants to support students in this effort and give them resources and the opportunity to practice writing a college essay before senior year.

We invite parents to attend the presentation if your schedule allows. The workshop will be held in Mercy's Auditorium on Wednesday, April 15th from 12:10pm to 1:40pm.

As part of the workshop, every 11th grade student is invited to sign-up for Wow's online college essay writing resources FREE of charge. This package of resources includes the following:
  • Wow Online College Essay: Wow's ten-step process for writing standout college essays; featuring short video tutorials, written guidelines and sample writing exercises.
  • College Access Resources: Recorded webinars, original articles on the college essay and other admission related topics.
  • ACT and SAT Tips and Tools: Sample ACT and SAT prompts, tip sheets for effective practice and recorded webinars.
To get access to Wow's resources and expertise, please follow these steps by May 1, 2015:

We are excited to be able to bring your daughter these resources throughout the application season. We are hopeful that this opportunity can provide students the guidance they need to navigate this aspect of the application.

Sincerely,

Mercy's Counseling Department
