Set in New York City, Newsies is based on the 1992 Disney movie of the same name which was based on the true story of the Newsboys strike of 1899. When the titan of journalism, Joseph Pulitzer, raises the cost for newsboys to sell ‘papes,’ the boys of New York, led by Jack Kelly, “seize the day” and revolt. Jack meets his match in the young journalist, Katherine Plummer, who inspires him to enlarge the strike to include all of the city’s down-trodden children in search of justice. As the strike turns into “The Children’s Crusade,” children from sweatshops, factories, and slaughterhouses join the strike to bring the newspaper industry to a standstill and eventually, to a resolution. The show boasts such tunes as Santa Fe, Carrying the Banner, King of New York, and the show, stopping Seize the Day.
