Farmington Hills Arts Commission 2019 High School Student Art Competition
Congratulations to three students from Mercy’s Art Department who won awards for their artwork in this year’s Farmington Hills Arts Commission 2019 High School Student Art Competition. These students are: Camille Compton - Best in Show; Avalon Barr - Honorable Mention; Katherine Wildern - Honorable Mention. Along with the award winning pieces, additional pieces of art were selected to be exhibited. These include artwork by Mercy students Katherine Wildern, Katie Kim, Sojourner Posch, Ava Rapp, Selina George, and Faye Storck. The 2019 High School Student Art Competition winners were chosen by the Farmington Area Arts Commissioner Ted Hadfield, an accomplished artist and graduate of the Cranbrook Institute of Arts. The recipients were honored at the Festival of the Arts Reception and Awards Ceremony on Friday, April 12th at the Costick Center in Farmington Hills. The event marked the 43rd year of recognizing excellence in the arts in the Farmington community.
Regional Scholastic Art Awards 2019
Congratulations to the 17 students from Mercy’s Art Department who won 28 awards in this year’s Regional Scholastic Art Awards competition.
Several Mercy students won gold keys (first place) and their pieces will compete in New York for national awards in March. These students are: Avalon Barr (one gold key in drawing), Sophia Bellisario (one gold key in photography), Lili Omilian (one gold key in photography), Sojourner Posch (one gold key in mixed media), Aja Underwood (one gold key in digital art), and Katie Wildern (two gold keys in digital art and one gold key in drawing).
The College for Creative Studies sponsors the Southeastern Michigan Art Region, which, this year, received nearly 6,300 individual entries and 229 senior portfolios from students in Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties. Jurors selected 1109 individual category works to receive gold key, silver key, and honorable mention awards. 16 gold key portfolios were selected from 229 submitted.
Regional winning entries will be on display in the exhibit at the College for Creative Studies, Walter B. Ford II Building from Monday, February 11th – Friday, March 1st. Hours: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday, noon – 5:00 pm Saturday and Sunday. The regional ceremony for Oakland County Private schools will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. in the Detroit Film Theater of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
