Mercy High School Monthly Parent E-Newsletter - June 2009

Wit's End . . . notes from the principal

Last Thursday, 177 lovely ladies formally ended their high school experience with graduation. This event was followed by a wonderful all-night party back at school. I truly hope that each member of the Class of 2009 has health, good fortune, and boundless opportunities in her future. I also hope that each one can look to service those in need and to contribute her wisdom in solving many of the world’s problems.

For every girl who remains a member of the Mercy community as a brand new sophomore, junior, or senior (after moving up!), I hope that the year behind you has not only challenged you but also inspired you to have lofty goals for next year.

I spoke to the graduating seniors at their commencement about something called “the butterfly effect.” Simply stated, it was proven that the single flap of a butterfly’s wing in one part of the world actually changes the weather that occurs in another part of the world. Any disturbance in the air alters what follows. My point to the seniors, and to you, is that each of us should really celebrate the impact that we have on the future. Every action, every movement, at every moment of our existence is contributing to the future . . . what will be (or not be). Too often, we think that things don’t matter, that people don’t matter. We couldn’t be more wrong.

Would the world be different if you weren’t here? Yes! Will the world be different after you’re gone? Yes! So while we have this short pause between life and death, and really one’s life span is only that, a pause, make some noise! Disturb the universe! At least disturb it on purpose, because indeed, you are making a difference whether or not you pay any attention. Make your disturbances ones that enhance the future.

And get a little rest this summer in between all the flapping of your wings!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Carolyn Witte, Principal
