Mercy is celebrating Catholic Schools Week and embracing the theme "Catholic Schools Celebrate Service!" Mercy students are involved with service projects in their neighborhoods as well as around the globe. From the yearly Focus: HOPE Food Drive which helps those in need in Metro-Detroit to a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Mercy School in Cambodia, Mercy High School students are making a difference in our world today.
We know that Mercy alumnae have continued the fine tradition of service. Are you involved in a special service activity? Share your story about how you serve your community or church in a meaningful way and send an email to alumnaeoffice@mhsmi.org. Your story may appear in an upcoming publication!

Heart of Mercy Winners
Religious Studies Teacher Ann Lusch and current student Megan Devine '09 were awarded the prestigious and heartfelt HEART of MERCY Award on January 29, 2009 to kick off Catholic Schools Week. Students and staff praised and applauded both of them for their uplifting spirits and everlasting loyalty to living out the Mercy Values.
From Rumor Control Central by Tom Schusterbauer
About 5 years ago, I missed a few days for surgery. I wrote a letter to students and parents, emphasizing that, indeed, this was not life threatening.
Result: when I came back I learned that I'd had a stroke, a heart attack, the amputation of various body parts. There it was, the Mercy Rumor Mill in full force.
Well, kids, this rumor is now officially a fact. After 41 years of teaching, 30 here at Mercy, I'm about to ride off into the sunset (it will probably be raining). But as I ride off, I will take with me many of my classroom and office artifacts, as well as the memory of my friends on staff, and of course, my students who stayed by my side when the dark brown hair and beard turned to grey and then to white. And supplied tissue when I began to drool.
My students, and my students alone, are the reason I chose to teach. I will miss them mightily.
My future?
Staying up late on Sunday nights, staying in touch with current students and those from decades ago via Facebook. And working as a part-time tender of the bar at Dick O'Dow's genuinely Irish pub in downtown Birmingham as soon as the smoking ban passes. And, of course, reading and going to the movies.
So grads who are in their 50s, 40s, 30s and in the last nine years of their 20s, belly up to the bar, I'll pull you a pint, and we'll laugh, just as we used to when the world was a wee bit younger and we were together.
