Mercy Alumnae Newsletter - January 2008

Happy New Year! Turning over another year is always exciting and there is much to look forward to in the year 2008.  I hope that getting involved at Mercy made it into some of your New Year's resolutions this year!   We welcome involvement from Mercy alumnae wherever you live.  On January 23 we will be having an open Alumnae Association Board meeting.  If you live in the area, please join us to hear about what the Alumnae Board is trying to accomplish to keep Mercy alumnae connected.  Come share your thoughts on what we can do better!

If you live out of state...send us updates about your life, stop by if you're in the neighborhood, and stay tuned for Mercy events on the move. Who knows, there may be a Mercy gathering in your neck of the woods in 2008!

This is an exciting time for me personally as I will be welcoming my first child into the world very soon!  While I am on maternity leave Rebecca Burnett Mathis '92 will be covering the office.  You will continue to receive the monthly e-newsletter to keep you up-to-date on Mercy happenings.  I will return right before Mercy's Tea for Tuition, so I hope to see many RSVPs from all of you!

Catholic Schools Week

Mercy will kick off a week-long celebration of Catholic Schools Week - Catholic Schools Light the Way with an all-school Mass and the awarding of the Heart of Mercy Award to a student and staff member on January 28.  This year Mercy is honored to welcome Bishop Daniel E. Flores to our school to preside at this special liturgy.

During Catholic Schools Week, two student leaders of Kairos will join U of D Jesuit students to speak about Kairos and their personal faith journey at Our Lady of Victory School.  They will speak to the middle school girls about keeping Christ centered in their life and the importance in continuing Catholic education.

Winter Open House

Let all the future Mercy girls in your life know that an upcoming Open House is taking place on Sunday, February 10 from 1-3pm.  This is for your daughters, granddaughters, nieces, and neighbors who live in the metro Detroit area and are in the 6th - 8th grades.

Open House is a perfect opportunity to tour our school; meet staff, students, and alumnae; and discover what it means to be a Mercy girl.

Contact Maureen Stirling '96 mpstirling@mhsmi.org in the Admissions Office for more information.

Reflect, Reconnect, Rejoice

With the Lenten season approaching, mark your calendars to take time out to reflect, reconnect and rejoice with Mercy alumnae and friends. The Alumnae Association is proud to host this event for women each year.

Break bread and enjoy a deliciously simple soup supper before the program. Three dynamic speakers are joining us this year to speak on topics related to the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy.

Alumnae Basketball Game . . . a Slam Dunk!

Varsity basketball coach Gary Morris brought back the Alumnae Basketball game this year!  31 Mercy alumnae laced up their sneakers to return to the Mercy gym for the Alumnae Game. Family and friends cheered from the stands as the Maroon Team took on the Gold Team. At half time Mercy dads challenged the alumnae players to a game of hoops. The dads won but we're guessing the alums were saving their energy for the second half of the game!

After the game all players enjoyed snacks provided by the Mercy Basketball Boosters. We look forward to making this game a Mercy alumnae tradition!   Be sure to join us next year to cheer on our Alumnae teams!

Check out the Mercy website to see some pictures from the game!

All that Jazz

After mingling and enjoying Christmas treats, a Mercy bus headed to downtown Detroit on December 21.  It was filled with Mercy alums and guests eager to enjoy a jazz concert at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Alumnae enjoyed the door-to-door service on a chilly winter evening. A wonderful jazz concert featuring songs of the Christmas season had everyone in festive spirits!

The 29th Annual Mercy Auction

With high expectations for this always exciting event, the Auction Team is reaching out to Mercy Alums with the hope that many of you will be able to participate in the Auction in some way.

ATTEND!  DONATE!  ADVERTISE!  BECOME A SPONSOR!

With your assistance, the goals of this important fundraiser can be reached and even exceeded!

Over the years, the Auction's most intriguing and successful items have have been acquired by Alums just like you.  The more unique and exclusive an item is, the greater amount of interest is generated and in turn the more successful the Auction will be.  Creativity and networking are key as you think of ways to support this year's Auction.  Please extend donation requests to anyone whom you think would be willing to support Mercy High School, including businesses, family members, friends, co-workers, etc...

Not quite sure what types of things are donated?  The sky's the limit!

Are you an out of town alumna who has a home or time share that us Michigan folk would consider a vacation get-away?  Consider donating a weekend at your place!

Perfect for alumnae!  Let a current Mercy Girl "shadow" you at work to experience "a day in the life of" your career.  Students are eager to meet Mercy grads and get a taste of their dream job in the working world.

Other ideas that are always popular are: Concert/Show Tickets, Golf Packages, Trips/Cruises/Weekend Adventures, Jewelry, and Gift Certificates.

Contact the Special Events Office at lckarbo@mhsmi.org for more information or to donate today!
