Mercy Alumnae Newsletter - October 2007

Greetings from the Alumnae Office!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Mercy students and staff supported the cause that affects so many women in the world today.  A special display of pictures of women in the Mercy family who have been touched by breast cancer was displayed in the Mercy Media Center for the month of October.  In addition, students and staff contributed $4,000 for the Sharing & Caring Breast Cancer Program affiliated with William Beaumont Hospital.  Sharing & Caring offers education and support for breast cancer patients and their families at the time of diagnosis, during treatment, and beyond.  All Mercy alumnae, staff, parents, and friends who are battling breast cancer are in our prayers.

On behalf of Mercy High School students and staff our heart goes out to all Mercy alumnae, family and friends in California who have been displaced by the fires.  There are 330 known Mercy alumnae residing in California.  Our prayers are with you.

Come for Sunday Mass, Stay for the Fall Play Anne of Green Gables adapted by Sylvia Ashby.
Anne of Green Gables, the classic children's play, focuses on Anne Shirley, a freckled young orphan who is sent to live with a stern spinster Marilla Cuthberth and her warm-hearted bachelor brother Mathew. The Cuthberts, thinking that they have agreed to adopt a young boy to help with farm chores at Green Gables are startled when Anne arrives and realize that their lives will never be the same again. Anne's warmth, wit and imagination affect everyone around her -- even, eventually, the cold Marilla. During the play, Anne ages four years, transforming herself from a rebellious girl into a young woman who is romantically paired with the handsome Gilbert Blythe.

Tickets are $8.  Join us for a performance in the MHS Auditorium on November 9 or 10 at 8:00 pm or November 11 at 2:00 pm.

Mercy Man Honored

On October 24 John Gernacy received "Ability is Ageless" Most ABLE Award by Operation ABLE.  This award recognizes employees who have served their organizations for many years and demonstrate that ability is ageless.  Operation ABLE is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986.  Guided by the philosophy that ability is ageless, ABLE's team of professionals works in collaboration with employers, community organizations and public agencies to help approximately 500 mid-career and older people each year.

During his 40 years at Mercy, John Gernacy has been a master of many endeavors.  His gifts and talents include teaching, managing course scheduling, organizing large scale student events, playing the organ at school activities, and running an annual arts and crafts show for tuition assistance.  He is dedicated, focused and turns out a tremendous amount of work.  With his can-do attitude, John graciously offers to help out on basically every activity of the school.  This includes coordinating the Honors Convocation, hosting staff parties and even substitute teaching.  As the keeper of the school's master schedule, he single-handedly arranges 1,000 students in more than 110 classes using a unique modular system that is not compatible with any computer software.  It's clear that John has earned his gray hair.

In 2000 John was honored by receiving the school's prestigious Heart of Mercy Award. Annually one staff member and one student are selected for this award.  They are nominated by both staff and students for being models of living the Mercy Values of:  Human Dignity, Mercy, Service, Justice and Option for the Poor.  Through his hard work and dedication, John demonstrates all these values.
